Leveraging New Media

Recent Past

As recently as 10 years ago, producing visual media was a costly and complex process. Writers and technicians worked with highly-specialized equipment to produce audio-visual media. It was common to use $1,000 per finished minute as a beginning estimate for video production costs. That 15-minute script you wrote could be brought to life, starring your employees, for a mere $15,000. Professional talent, substantial graphics or animations, many location shoots, and a host of other factors could drive that cost much higher.

If you managed to swallow the high production costs, you next faced the distribution costs and issues. Although tape duplication itself was relatively inexpensive, it was at best a cumbersome and time-consuming exercise in logistics to get your finished programming in the hands of your viewers. And, as with any physical media, all those tapes became obsolete as soon as the first update was needed, or the first error was discovered, whichever came first.

Today

Things have changed. Inexpensive video cameras allow recording of great-quality digital video, providing an inexpensive yet powerful knowledge capture tool that can reveal the intimate details of how a task is (or should be) performed. Supporting graphics can also be produced digitally at modest cost.

Best of all, broadband internet access has made it possible to distribute video via the Internet. Keep in mind that we're not talking about three-hour Hollywood feature films here. We're referring to short, compelling, practical visual media to capture and share knowledge among employees. This type of programming can be easily produced and distributed via the web today, with only a minimum of technical wizardry...and aef Productions can help!
